| Title: Chant the Yoga Sutras. Deepen Your Understanding of Yoga Through Sanskrit Chanting |
| Description: |
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a foundational text of Yoga Philosophy and Practice. Traditionally, an aspirant learned the Sutras from a teacher through call-and-response chanting, Shruti Parampara. In this manner, over time, the ear, tongue, and mind were refined and purified. When the aspirant chants regularly, the terminology of Yoga becomes familiar and the meaning of the Sutras are revealed.
In class we will review the sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet, chant significant Sutras, and discuss the meaning and application of their essential philosophical terms.
As we chant, by placing attention on proper pronunciation, vocal quality, and meaning, we will increase our vocabulary of the Science of Yoga and develop the philosophical tools needed to cultivate the mind of a Yoga practitioner. Sutra Chanting is an exhilarating and vital aspect of Yoga practice. |

| Title: History
Of Indian Yogis 2000 B.C. - 2000 A.D. |
| Description: |
| Most reconstructions of the history of yoga in India have focused on the term "yoga" as it is found in a selection of major religious and philosophical texts, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita of the Mahabharata, and the Hathayogapradipika of Svatmaraman. These reconstructions have tended to emphasize a body of ecstatic and meditative practice. When, however, one traces the history of the term "yogi," the presumed agent of yogic practice, the reconstruction changes radically. From the very earliest accounts of yogis, as found in narrative passages of the Mahabharata, and down through the Tantras and medieval and modern non-scriptural accounts, the image of the Indian yogi has been one of a phenomenally powerful, but also dangerous possessor of supernatural powers, who exits his own body, often to take over those of other people. Using archeological, iconographic, and textual data, this course will survey the image of the Indian yogi from the earliest times down to the present day. The conclusions it will draw will be most surprising. |

| Description: |
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Gaining a Deep Understanding of Yoga. Monthly Study Group in Santa Monica.
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are four books of clear and concise statements that explain the goal, the benefits, and the methods of Yoga. Written around 200 B.C., the Sutras are just as helpful today for those who are serious about Yoga.
A free study/discussion group meets monthly in Santa Monica. It is hosted by four long term students of Baba Hari Dass: Jaisri Brimmer, Veda Prakash Ahlen, Sunita Marie, Prabhawati Ahlen. The study group is ongoing - you can come anytime.
We use a translation and commentary, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: A Study Guide for Book One – Samādhi Pāda, by Baba Hari Dass. It is written in clear language for a modern Western audience. Baba Hari Dass is a yoga master from India who has been teaching the Yoga Sutras in the U.S. for more than 30 years.
In each session, one or two Sutras are read in the original Sanskrit language and in English. The commentary is read and this is followed by open discussion. All materials are projected, so no text purchase is needed.

| Title: Yoga Sutra study classes. The Barn, Priestfields. |
| Description: |
Yoga sutra study classes: What to expect
The aim is to work systematically through the Yoga Sutra so that students may gain a thorough knowledge of this key Yoga text. Each class will include presentation of a number of key sutras (typically 2-6 per session), possibly a short meditative practice and time for discussion. Worksheets will be provided for notes.
The Yoga Sutra study classes are intended to be both serious in content, yet also light hearted and fun in presentation. They are suitable for any Yoga teachers or students who are open to explore this fascinating text and the possibilities that it offers. No prior experience is required although some familiarity with the form of the sutras is an advantage. We will explore the meaning of the sanskrit, discuss the concepts presented, and explore how these can be made relevant in our own lives.
The Yoga Sutra study classes are ongoing and enrolment is for the year. It is common for students to join part way through the year and a pro-rata fee is charged.
For students who have to miss a session an additional private 1 hour tutorial is offered to help make up the material (limit of 1 session per series). Worksheets shall be provided for notes.
Do I know enough?
Some students can feel that they do not have enough knowledge to join a group such as this. In our experience it is often less a case of actual experience and more a case of attitude. If you are interested, open and have willingness to learn then that is usually enough. Although there is some sanskrit used, it is all explained and gradually it just starts to seep in. All that is required is to turn up and take what you can. You are not expected to be an expert in advance!

| Title: Professional Yoga Training |
| Description: |
Only a few people know that Yoga consists of eight steps, with meditation and contemplation as top. This is described by the sage Patanjali a very long time ago. The eight steps of Yoga are: moral principles and -ideals, physical postures, energy control, detachment, concentration, meditation and contemplation. In our school you systematically follow these eight steps: you first receive a Basic Training Course, followed by a Teacher Training Course and then a Master Training Course. The goal is to develop yourself and eventually reach Enligthenment. Even if you have no intention to teach, you can join us. Practice has shown us that many started to teach Yoga after the Course. That is why it is called Teacher Training Course.
The Training is just as thousands years ago. There are many references to the classic Sanskrit literature. However you will soon notice that the emphasis lays on the exercises and the lively experience, and not on the rich literature. That is because especially the exercises are important for your development. Your health improves. You work on your self and you feel better and better. Even your dreams come true. |
